The Center: On the Navel as the Axis of Creation
Before you had a face, you had a center.
Before your eyes opened, before your voice, before your name — there was a cord at your navel, and everything you needed came through it. Not earned. Not requested. Received. Your first relationship with the world was not one of performance. It was one of connection. You were fed, held, and grown from a single point at the center of your body, and you did nothing to deserve it except exist.
Then you were born, the cord was cut, and the mark it left never faded. The navel is the one scar every human carries in the same place — proof, written on the body, that you were once joined to a source of life. Most people never think about it again.
We think about it constantly.
The point that came first
In many of the traditions our work draws from, the navel is not an afterthought of anatomy. It is the origin point — the place from which the body organized itself outward. The Sanskrit word nabhi names it, and older cosmologies place creation itself at a navel: the lotus rising from the center, the world unfolding from a single sustaining point. This is not decoration. It is a way of saying something true — that creation moves from the inside out, from a center to an edge, never the reverse.
You did not grow from your skin inward. You grew from your center outward. Everything you are radiated from that point.
Shakti does not arrive. It rises.
There is a word for the energy that gathers at the center of the body and moves through it: Shakti. It is usually translated as power, but that is not quite it. Shakti is the creative force itself — the capacity to bring something into being where there was nothing. It is feminine not because it belongs only to women, but because creation has always been understood as a feminine act. To make life. To make meaning. To make anything at all.
And here is the part worth sitting with: Shakti does not come from outside you. It is not granted by approval, awarded by achievement, or switched on by someone else's attention. It rises. From the base of the spine, through the center, outward into the world — energy that was always there, waiting to move. The traditions are consistent on this point. What you are looking for was never external. It was coiled at your center the whole time.
Everything you create moves through the center first
Watch where power actually lives in the body. Not the head — the head narrates. The center acts. A dancer moves from the core. A singer's breath begins below the navel. A woman carries and delivers life from the exact region the cord once occupied. When you laugh from your whole body, when grief doubles you over, when fear arrives — you feel it at the center first. The body has always known where it begins.
Creation follows the same path. An idea, a child, a piece of art, a decision to change your life — it forms at the center and moves outward through the hands, the voice, the body. Nothing is created from the edges inward. The center comes first. It always has.
Why we mark it
This is why our pieces end where they do. A corset draws the eye to the center of the body — not to expose it, but to honor it. The garment frames the origin point. It says, without saying: here is where you begin. Here is the axis. Here is the part of you that came before everything else and holds everything together.
We are not asking you to believe in anything. We are asking you to remember something your body already knows. That you were made from a center, not an edge. That the energy you keep searching for outside yourself has a location, and the location is you. That before you were taught to seek your worth in the eyes of others, you were whole — fed and formed from a single point that asked nothing of you.
The navel is a small mark. It is also the first evidence of your life, the axis you grew around, and a permanent reminder of the same truth we return to in everything we make.
You create. The energy moves through you.
It always has.
